Download time calculator

Work out how long a download or upload takes at your internet speed, the speed you need to finish in time, or how much data a connection moves. Everything runs in your browser.

The share of the plan speed you actually get. 100 is the theoretical best; over a cable 85 to 95 is typical, and Wi-Fi is often lower.

At common plan speeds

Mbps or MB/s?

Plans are in bits, downloads in bytes

Internet plans in Nepal are sold in Mbps, megabits per second. Browsers, app stores and download managers show MB/s, megabytes per second. A byte is 8 bits, so divide by 8: a 100 Mbps plan downloads at most 12.5 MB/s.

Real downloads are a little slower

Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi, a busy server and other devices sharing the line all take a share. Getting 85 to 95% of the plan speed over a cable is normal, and the speed to a server abroad can be lower than to one in Nepal. Lower the efficiency to allow for it.

GB or GiB?

Drive makers and macOS count 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows counts in 1,024s (1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes) but still writes GB, which is why a 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB. Pick the binary units for sizes Windows reports.

Nothing you enter leaves your browser. Results are the time the data itself takes at a steady speed; starting a download, a slow server or a busy network add to it. The same maths works for uploads, using your upload speed.
